Historic Sports Memorabilia Auction Excites Collectors

Freeman’s/Hindman has sparked a wave of excitement among sports enthusiasts and collectors with its current sports memorabilia auction, showcasing a range of historic and valuable items. A standout highlight of the auction is the complete set of 1984-85 Star Company basketball cards, contained in their original team bags, which includes the prized Michael Jordan rookie card. This set of 288 cards is predicted to command a staggering price between $50,000 and $70,000 due to its rarity and the timeless appeal of Michael Jordan in the collectibles market.

The 1980s saw the rise of the Star Company in the sports trading card industry, as they secured NBA rights after Topps chose not to renew its contract. The limited distribution channels for Star cards, primarily through mail orders and select locations, rendered them scarce compared to cards from larger companies. The fact that many collectors opened their packs to store them in albums makes unopened sets like the one in this auction incredibly rare and valuable.

While basketball takes center stage in this auction, baseball aficionados will also find notable pieces to covet. Among the treasures are three baseballs signed by the legendary Babe Ruth, including one with Ruth’s bold signature on the sweet spot of a mini baseball. These autographed baseballs serve as tangible connections to Ruth’s enduring legacy and are sure to attract collectors of historical sports memorabilia.

In addition to the iconic Jordan rookie card, the auction boasts various other noteworthy cards from his early career, such as the 1984 Gold Medalist No. 195 and the 1985 Rookie of the Year No. 288, along with a graded PSA 8 1986-87 Fleer rookie card. Vintage card enthusiasts will also appreciate offerings like the rare 1968 O-Pee-Chee Nolan Ryan rookie card graded PSA 8 and a near-complete set of 1952 Topps baseball cards featuring over 60 high numbers. The inclusion of multiple Mickey Mantle cards further enhances the appeal for collectors seeking pieces from baseball’s golden era.

The auction doesn’t stop at cards and autographs—it also features unique sports memorabilia like a San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XXIV Champions ring, a 1926 New York Yankees multi-signed baseball with autographs from Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, and a collection of 1920s-30s St. Louis Cardinals contract agreements signed by Branch Rickey.

Running until June 13 on Freeman’s/Hindman’s website, this auction offers a chance for sports enthusiasts and collectors to acquire a slice of sports history. Whether you’re passionate about basketball, baseball, or the broader spectrum of American sports, this event presents an opportunity to own a piece of sporting heritage that will undoubtedly stand the test of time.
