REA’s February Auction Makes Record Sales

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) recently wrapped up its February auction, where vintage sports cards took center stage, leading to outstanding sales exceeding $1.2 million. The highlight of the event was the remarkable sale of a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card for a jaw-dropping $75,000. This transaction not only set a new record for this particular card but also highlighted the robust demand for rare vintage sports cards among enthusiasts and collectors.

Another notable item in the auction was the Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series. Graded as PSA GOOD 2, this card surpassed expectations by breaking a record of its own, selling for $15,000. The auction attracted a considerable number of registry builders and collectors who were eager to get their hands on coveted pieces of sports memorabilia.

One of the key highlights of the auction was the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among these, the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card stole the spotlight by fetching an impressive $19,200, marking the highest price achieved for a non-Hall of Famer card from this set in its grade.

With a vast selection of 2,732 items up for bidding, REA presented a diverse array of collectibles, including other top-selling items like a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background graded PSA VG-EX 4, which sold for $21,000. Additionally, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig graded PSA EX-MT 6 fetched $18,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball graded PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set went for $12,000, among many other impressive sales.

Brian Dwyer, the President of REA, expressed his delight at the auction’s broad appeal and the enthusiastic engagement from the collector community. He also hinted at exciting offerings to come in REA’s upcoming March and Spring Auctions, indicating a promising future for sports collectibles enthusiasts.

This auction by REA not only showcases the enduring popularity and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for future events filled with thrilling opportunities for collectors and enthusiasts. With the next Encore event scheduled for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction starting on April 5, REA continues to establish itself as a premier platform in the sports collectibles market, captivating the interest of fans and collectors worldwide.
