Robert Edward Auctions Debuts 2024 with Historic Baseball Memorabilia

Robert Edward Auctions is starting off the year with a bang, presenting an extraordinary assortment of baseball memorabilia and collectibles from throughout history. This highly anticipated Encore event features an extensive collection of nearly 3,700 lots, making it one of the most comprehensive auctions in recent memory. Baseball enthusiasts and collectors alike will be delighted by the wide range of items available, ranging from autographed pieces to iconic baseball cards.

The spotlight item of the auction is a signed receipt from Alexander Cartwright, an acclaimed pioneer of the sport. This unique piece dates back to 1842, marking it as one of the earliest and most significant artifacts of baseball history. Collectors will be captivated by the direct connection to Cartwright and the sport’s humble beginnings.

An exceptionally rare item from the 19th century is the 1888 N403 Yum Yum Tobacco John Clarkson “Throwing” card. Graded EX 5, this card represents the only known PSA-graded example featuring the Hall of Fame pitcher and outfielder. Its scarcity and historical significance make it an invaluable treasure for any collector.

Harry Wright, a prominent figure in early baseball history, is also represented in the auction with his personal scorecard from a game between Philadelphia and the Providence Grays dated June 22, 1883. This one-of-a-kind item is scored in both pencil and blue ink and bears Wright’s signature, certified as a 9 by PSA. It provides a tangible connection to the early days of the sport, making it an extraordinary find.

The auction opens with a bang, featuring an SGC 1.5 graded 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card, among a vast collection of Mantle items. Furthermore, collectors can explore over 250 autographed items, with signatures from iconic figures of baseball’s past.

Brian Dwyer, President of REA, expressed his excitement for this Encore Auction, confirming it as one of the strongest auctions the company has ever presented. Dwyer emphasized the diverse selection of signed items and iconic cards, catering to collectors of all preferences and budgets.

In addition to the aforementioned highlights, the auction includes several other noteworthy pieces of baseball history. These include the 1914 E145 Cracker Jack #37 Grover Alexander SGC VG 3 card, the 1986 Topps Football #374 Steve Young Rookie SGC GEM MINT 10 card, a Babe Ruth cut signature, a 1938 Lou Gehrig signed postcard, a 1924 Walter Johnson signed album page, and a 1939 Honus Wagner signed Baseball Centennial First-Day Cover. The auction also presents a trio of 1954 Topps #128 Hank Aaron rookie cards, a 1957 Topps Football #138 Johnny Unitas Rookie BVG NM-MT 8 card, and early Michael Jordan cards, among numerous others.

Collectors will find a wide array of signed checks, including ones autographed by Jackie Robinson, Ty Cobb, and Roberto Clemente. The T206 offerings are equally impressive, with over 720 options available, featuring rare advertising backs and cards displaying the elusive Carolina Brights backs.

As customary for REA’s Encore Auctions, all items have a starting bid of $10, ensuring accessibility to enthusiasts of various budgets. Bidding is now live on the company’s website and will continue until January 21, providing ample time for collectors to secure their very own piece of baseball history and rare memorabilia.
